Strike of merchants at Baneh’s bazaar continues in protest to border closure in Iran
On Wednesday, May 9th, the merchants and shopkeepers of the bordering city of Baneh in Iran, continued their unilateral and national strike in protest to the closure of the border and raising customs tariffs by the Iranian government.
This strike has continued despite the Iranian government’s crack down with its oppressive pressures, including the nightly arrests of young people, businessmen and merchants, as well as Internet disconnection.
The Iranian government has completely closed the borders of Baneh, Marivan, Piranhasar and Sardasht in recent months. The closure of the borders, and especially the porters’ pathway borders, has led to a sharp rise in unemployment.
